Dr. Wallace,

I applaud you for your advice to the young lady. Child molestation is a worldwide problem. In our federation it is a monster whose head is permitted to be raised because many of us hide our heads in the sand. The Special Victims Unit in St. Kitts has done a remarkable job in protecting our children by investigating and prosecuting those charged with unlawful carnal knowledge.

One in four girls are molested by time she is 18 and 1 in 6 boys are molested. This means that more boys are molested than girls. And yes, it is done mainly by family members of family friends. People the children should feel safe and protected with. It is a crime, not a culture.

In the United States there is no time limitation for prosecution. That means if you molest a child, no matter how long ago it was, once a report is made to the police, it must be investigated. Such abuse leads to anger being vented by boys and promiscuity by girls. It also leads to trust issues in the opposite sex and many times lead to same sex interest. It also explains our high teenage pregnancy rate across the Caribbean. It is a problem that needs to be addressed, and I support the SVU and you for your efforts combat it. It is a crime but it is under reported.

Thank you,

Dr. Celvin G. Walwyn
