Under the distinguished patronage of the New, radical,
energetic and outgoing Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, The Honourable
Shawn K. Richards of The St. Kitts and Nevis Team Unity Administration, Mr.
Anthony Wiltshire’s Trinity Bronte Welsh Primary School Literacy Day 2015 was
officially marked open during the early part of today’s school day, Wednesday,
25th March, 2015.
The short opening ceremony which was recorded by State TV –
ZIZ Broadcasting Cooperation was cheered by Deputy Head Teacher Mr. Rawlins.
The ceremony included a prayer by Teacher Debbie Weekes-Claxton, the singing of
the national anthem, presentations by students and Brief remarks by Head
Teacher Anthony Wiltshire, Deputy Prime Minister Richards and Permanent
Secretary in The Ministry of Education Mrs. Ionie Liburd-Willett.
Under the theme, Read, Lead, Succeed, all speakers
reinforced the importance of READING during their presentations. What was quite
noteworthy, was to see Deputy Prime Minister Shawn Richards, reach right down to
the level of the children and engage a few of them individually as he made his
presentation on READING, indeed proving that HE
IS NOT GOD like many politicians seem to portray,
but rather a servant of the people.
Permanent Secretary Mrs. Ionie Liburd-Willett gave a run
down of her early life where she loved spending time reading at the Public
Library in the heart of Basseterre, before it was burned down years ago and
later at the new Public Library located close to The Clarence Fitzroy Bryant
College. Mrs. Willett beckoned students not to spend all of their time on
facebook and the internet playing games and having fun, but reminded them of
the importance of using the internet to also read online newspapers and
articles and to study and learn.
After the ceremony, each class at The Trinity Bronte Welsh
Primary School was pampered with their own invited adult reader from different communities
throughout The Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.
T-shirts for this event were printed by Trinity's KVK ENTERPRISES – www.kvklives.com
